My first AWS deployment wasn't a smooth sailing; it was a stormy voyage straight into a billing nightmare.

Then came the bill. It wasn't just a little higher than expected; it was astronomical. I'm talking hundreds of dollars for a website that was essentially just my resume and a few hobby projects. My heart sank. How could this possibly happen? I wasn't running any heavy computations, no massive data transfers. I started digging through the AWS Cost Explorer, and that's when the horror dawned on me.
The biggest culprits?
An RDS instance that I completely forgot about: I spun up a db.t3.medium instance with plenty of storage, thinking "better safe than sorry." I assumed I'd shut it down after testing, but in my excitement, I forgot. This one instance alone was costing me a significant chunk daily.
Unused Elastic IP Addresses: I'd attached Elastic IPs to instances that were long gone, but the IPs themselves incurred a small charge when not associated with a running instance. It's a "phantom" charge that sneaks up on you.
Excessive S3 Data Transfer Out: While CloudFront is great for caching, I hadn't configured my S3 bucket correctly for static website hosting. Some direct access requests were bypassing CloudFront, leading to higher S3 data transfer charges than anticipated.
EBS Volumes Not Deleted: When I terminated my EC2 instances, I didn't explicitly delete the associated EBS volumes. These orphaned storage disks continued to accrue costs.
The most alarming part was seeing the line item for the RDS instance. It was a constant, steady drain on my (non-existent) wallet. Dodging the Bullet: Reining in the Cloud Costs

1. The Rogue RDS Instance: A Database Gone Wild

EBS Volumes: I navigated to the EC2 dashboard, then to "Elastic Block Store" > "Volumes." I sorted by "State" and looked for any volumes that were "available" (not attached to an instance). For each, I confirmed it wasn't holding any critical data (since I'd deleted the instances, this was usually the case) and then selected "Actions" > "Delete Volume."
